Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan Details

Vaccination Series

We vaccinate all Right Start members with the full puppy vaccine series for distemper, parvo, and adenovirus. We include the Leptospirosis 4-ways and Canine Influenza vaccines for puppies at risk for those diseases. Family Veterinary Mobile Clinic uses the safest most effective vaccines available.

Distemper- Parvo Vaccine Combination

Two of the most diseases puppies in our area face are canine distemper and parvovirus. In our area, parvo is particularly rampant. There is no way to protect your puppy from parvo without vaccinations; you can bring home the virus on your clothing and shoes. Parvo treatment involves intensive and expensive hospitalization, IV fluids, round-the-clock nursing care, antibiotics to treat secondary infections, assisted feedings, anti-nausea medications, and more. Sometimes puppies still die from this terrible disease. You definitely want to prevent your puppy from suffering from parvo!

All puppies need distemper-parvo vaccines starting at 6 weeks, then every 3 weeks until they are at least 18 weeks of age. You can learn more about why on our blog “Vaccinology.” Right Start Puppy Wellness Plans include the entire distemper-parvo puppy vaccine series.

Rabies Vaccine

Rabies is a 100% fatal virus that can infect puppies if they are bitten by a rabid animal such as a cat, bat, raccoon, fox, or skunk. It is also 100% fatal in humans. That is why all puppies in North Carolina must receive a rabies vaccine at age 12-16 weeks by law. Frankly, there is no rational reason to not vaccinate against rabies according to law throughout the dog’s entire life. Our vaccines are thermisol free and very unlikely to cause reactions. Unvaccinated or overdue dogs are subject to quarantine or euthanasia if they bite a human for any reason. It’s simply not worth the risk. All puppies enrolled in the Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan receive a rabies vaccine between the ages of 12 and 16 weeks.

Kennel Cough Vaccine

“Kennel Cough” is a generic term for canine infectious respiratory disease (CIRD), which has at least 12 different causes. Our intra-nasal vaccine protects against 3 of the most common and severe of them: Canine Adenovirus 2, Canine Parainfluenza Virus, and Bordetella bronchiseptica. We recommend this vaccine for all puppies because puppies should be positively socialized with healthy dogs at a very young age. The kennel cough vaccine is required for our Right Start Puppy Training course and is recommended for all puppies who will be boarding, grooming, or otherwise exposed to unknown dogs in a closed environment.

Leptospirosis 4-way Vaccine

The urine of rodents, deer, opossums, and many farm animals may contain a bacteria called Leptospira. The bacteria stay alive in freshwaters such as puddles, ponds, and lakes. Infection occurs when the puppy stands in or drinks infected water. Leptospirosis causes rapid liver and kidney failure. If your puppy is at risk for leptospirosis, there is no additional charge to administer the vaccine in the Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan.

Canine Influenza

The only reason we administer the bivalent Canine Influenza vaccine is that some boarding and grooming facilities require it. For dogs who will be spending a lot of time in an enclosed area with other dogs, it’s a good idea to have the canine influenza vaccine. If your puppy is at risk for Canine Influenza, or if you are planning to take him or her to a facility that requires the vaccine, it is included in the Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan. More about Canine Influenza can be found here.

Deworming and Fecal Testing

Because roundworms and hookworms are very common fecal parasites of puppies in this area, we include 2 rounds of fenbendazole (Panacur) with every Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan. Fenbendazole also treats whipworms which are not as common here. If other parasites such as tapeworms, coccidia, or giardia are found during the fecal test, additional medications are included.

Just because you don’t see worms in your puppy’s stool, or they aren’t having diarrhea, doesn’t mean that they are not infected. All but roundworms and tapeworms are too small to see by the naked eye. GI parasites shed eggs that are found in the fecal test only intermittently. Because many of these parasites can also infect people (especially children), it is safer to prophylactically (preventively) deworm all puppies.

If your puppy has soft stools or diarrhea, we’ll run a fecal test right away. Otherwise, we perform fecal testing after the 2 rounds of deworming.

Examinations in Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan

Puppies grow up FAST! The first year of a dog’s life is equivalent to 15 human years. That is why it is so important for Dr. Meghan to examine your puppy at each Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan visit. With our comprehensive Fear Free in-home exams, you can rest assured that any abnormalities in your puppy’s growth and development will be caught early when treatments are better.

Microchip

Microchips are a way to protect your new furkid so that they can be returned to you if they are ever separated for any reason. Animal hospitals and shelters scan stray animals for a chip, and if one is found, they can contact the owner to be reunited with their pet. In order for the microchip to work, you MUST register it! Some companies charge to register the chip every year. We don’t think that’s fair, so our chips come with lifetime free registration. You can upgrade services if desired but it’s not necessary. All puppies are microchipped as part of the Right Stat Puppy Wellness Plan.

Right Start Puppy Training

Enroll your puppy in our Right Start Puppy Group or Private in-person training and enjoy a 10% discount for being a Right Start Puppy Wellness Plan member. Jael is our Fear Free and Animal Behavior College Certified Dog Trainer. She teaches you how to train your puppy with all the foundation behaviors to make him or her a fabulous family dog.

Spay and Neuter

Right Start Wellness Plan members get a 10% discount off spay and neuter services. We apply this discount up to 2 years of age. Studies show that it is better for joint health to wait until large and giant breed dogs are more mature before spaying or neutering them. This is to protect their joint and bone health.
