Category: Senior Dog Food

Senior dog food is specially formulated to meet the needs of older dogs. It is typically lower in fat and calories to account for reduced activity levels.  Most senior dog foods also have joint supplements including glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids.

The age at which your dog becomes a senior varies by their size.  Switch your dog to senior food at the following age:

  • Under 20 pounds, 10-12 years old
  • 21-50 pounds, 7-9 years old
  • 51-100 pounds, 6-8 years old
  • over 100 pounds, 6 years old

If you have a large breed senior dog, I recommend feeding large breed senior dog food.  It is further restricted in fat and calories but has higher protein to help maintain lean muscle mass.
