Primal Freeze Dried Dog Food Nuggets Beef

A safe, nutritious, and delicious way to make dry adult food taste great is to add Primal Freeze-Dried Adult Dog Food as a topper to the kibble.

$15.98 for a 5.5 oz bag, about 18 nuggets per bag

$34.98 for a 14 oz bag, about 50 nuggets per bag

You’re probably wondering if I’ve lost my mind recommending a grain-free food for dogs.  I promise I’m not crazy.

The more we study how grain-free diets cause some dogs to get dilated cardiomyopathy, a potentially fatal heart disease, the more we think it is due to the pulses they use to replace the grains for a carbohydrate source.  Pulses are things like peas, chickpeas, beans, etc.  Primal Freeze-Dried Adult Dog Food does not have any pulses in it, even though it is grain-free.

Second, Primal Freeze-Dried Dog Food is extremely expensive.  For a 50 pound dog, they need about 24 nuggets per day.  A 14 oz bag has about 50 nuggets.  That’s about $20 per DAY to feed a medium-sized dog.

What I recommend is using this as a topper to a complete and balanced dry dog food at least a few times per week.  Your dog will LOVE you for it!  And you’ll be supplying safe, complete, balanced, raw nutrition at the same time for a reasonable cost.

I only recommend raw food for healthy adult dogs.  Puppies, seniors, and dogs with chronic conditions (besides arthritis) should not eat raw food.  Also, raw goat milk is not safe to feed to dogs, so please ignore that labeling recommendation.

As a sole diet, feed your dog by the weight range below:

  • 5–10 lbs: 4–7 nuggets
  • 10–20 lbs: 7–11 nuggets
  • 20–40 lbs: 11–19 nuggets
  • 40–60 lbs: 19–26 nuggets
  • 60–80 lbs: 26–32 nuggets
  • 80–100 lbs: 32–40 nuggets
  • 100 lbs and above: 40+ nuggets

As a topper, you can feed as many as you need to flavor the base diet.  Each nugget is 44 kcal so reduce your dog’s base diet accordingly.

    Expensive and difficult to process

The nuggets are actually rectangular blocks that are supposed to be crumbled and hydrated. They are dense and difficult to crumble and don’t absorb liquids very easily. Not at all what I was expecting

New puppy finally ate her food!

My new Maltese puppy Shirah was not interested in eating, her first days at her new home. Gave her this and she scarfed it like a wolf! However, gave her potty problems, so now we just add some to her regular food, and she is good. Eating regularly. Just too rich for her little tummy if we give it straight. Mixed is perfect. She loves it!

Our very, very, very picky eater loves this!

We adopted this little guy a year ago and seriously struggled with getting him to eat anything on a regular basis. I’m not kidding when I say we tried well over 20 different dog foods. We tried several different dog foods that claimed were for picky eaters. Well our boy didn’t touch them. We even tried raw meat which he would eat sometimes and then no go the next. We tried cooking meat, with the same results. I’ve waited a few weeks to write this review so I knew it wasn’t a fluke. Remington loves this stuff! He is now way more active and just looks better over all. Huge thank you to Primal for such a quality food.

    My Shiba Inu loves this!

I am not in the habit of changing my shiba’s food but he is getting old and was no longer enthusiastic about his ZiwiPeak food (he used to love it but then it was no longer something he enjoyed and he had no health issues). So after much research, I decided to try this product on him. I tried the small package first just in case he did not like it. I started re-hydrating it and still mixed some of his ZiwiPeak with it. Being a shiba inu, he ate all of this and picked seemed to ignore his ZiwiPeak. He loves this food! I have also noticed that his potty habits are now more regular and the stool is firm. He has had no issues with this food at all and he really seems to enjoy it. He is almost 14 so perhaps one appeal is the once rehydrated this food is softer and less dry for him. I feel like I am doing something good for him with this food and he seems to have adjusted to it like a champ. Today is his physical so I guess we will see. I am very happy with this product and my dog gives it the paws of approval!

    She wud not eat it!

Considering how expensive this dog food is I expected more of a reaction but a few sniffs and she walked away. The write up of this product made it sound health and that dogs would enjoy. Very disappointed,

    My dog loves these!

The media could not be loaded.

My dog absolutely loves these mixed with a little warm water (1/4 cup) and then mixed in with his dry dog food. I only use a 1/2 nugget and it softens in the water so easily. When I take him to the kennel, these make his dry food special while he is there. They are so easy to handle that the kennel actually asked me to continue bringing them because he eats so well when they are mixed in with his dry food. Try them for yourself and see what I’m talking about. They are fabulous!!!!!

Amazing as a dog food topper if your dog is reluctant to eat

We have been using these based on a friends recommendation for the last 2 months. We have a dog that is reluctant to eat, and crumbling a piece over his food has him excited to eat again. Another bonus is that they are packed with good nutrition.

Pure ingredients and convenient, non-messy nuggets

I have a rescue dog with nervous stomach and has not tolerated a lot of foods I’ve tried. The freeze dried nuggets are not only pure, uncomplicated food, but are easy to use and don’t have an unpleasant odor

My dog likes it not messy

My dog has been eating kibbes but stopped for some reason. I was reading and hearing that dogs like to eat freeze dried food so. Gave it a try. I missed with beef broth or just plain water and a few pieces of meat or chicken. Also it doesn’t attract ants when it sits in the bowl

The nuggets are the thickness of 2 dominos stacked.

The nuggets were larger than I thought they would be. I tried to reconstitute them with broth. Took longer than expected to break them down.

    How we crumble

Picky pup now happily cleans his bowl. Agree it is hard to crumble.. We take the new, unopened bag outside to hard surface (concrete or driveway) and hammer contents with our short-handled sledge, a rubber mallet or hammer to break up the nuggets for the whole bag. More trouble than we like but there is no waste.

    Hard to crumble

Are the lamb and beef formulas harder to crumble than the chicken and turkey formulas? Can’t tell if that’s the case or I got bad batches.

Cut the chunks with a knife!

This is the only thing my dogs will eat, they even prefer it over the many home cooked human food recipes for dogs that I have tried. The only downside is the price, but that is probably because the ingredients are actually pure and healthy. As an organic eater myself, I understand this completely. The chunks are hard to break up with the hands. I place them on a cutting board in a row and just cut them into small pieces with a big knife before adding water. Otherwise, this is a great product in all ways.

Primal is the only food my BGSD will eat without a reaction so I am great full to be able to order it and have it shipped at no extra cost. My only wish is for it to get here faster. I believe it takes 5 days for some reason.

    SO HAPPY!!

Finally my super picky baby found something that she wanted to eat!! After months of searching to find anything that she would eat she finally cleaned her bowl!! The only con is that it is difficult to crumble but it is worth the struggle since she finally is eating! I used bone broth to mix and I’m going to try warm water next to see which one she prefers! 10/10

Last 2 orders the cubes are extremely hard

Previous orders of primal freeze dried beef were not hard, so you could break the cube up. These last two bags are so hard you have to soak them in water for about an hour so the dog could eat them.

    Pup loves it!

Pup was fed dry food for months, and just stopped eating. I tried changing to another highly rated brand, 3 times. Nibbles, then stops eating. Even cooked specially for him, but even the bacon, egg, cheese and spinach omelets that he loved only lasted a few weeks. Moist and canned food he sniffed and walked away from. He eats only this food, beef flavor… clean bowl every time. Downside, it doesn’t crumble easily. I can only break up the bricks by knifepoint. However, it’s worth a little extra effort to see his vitality and teasingly flirty behavior restored. Pricey but the result is worth it. 4.5 overall rating

Great quality food with excellent skin and hair results

I’ve been feeding this brand for most of my dog’s short life. He will not eat most kibble and definitely doesn’t like some of the major kibble brands. I’ve used RR’s frozen, freeze dried, treats, and goat milk. My dog loves it and the result is a fit, oh-so-soft fur baby with a happy belly. Poops are always well formed and twice a day. On kibble the poor dude will poop upwards of 5 times per day– on RR it’s always twice like clockwork. He always eagerly gobbles it up, and can barely contain himself while I make him sit and WAIT for his meals. He will walk away from kibble and won’t eat. I have a dog that doesn’t like to drink water, so mixing extra water into his food makes a nice slurry he slurps up. The results were so good, my parents switched their elderly dog to it, and can’t believe how it’s changed their pup– he had severe skin issues and itchiness–all gone on this food. I’ve used all the flavors except chicken, and even accidentally bought the cat versions (ha!) he likes those too! I did switch to using goat kefir on top for the probiotic benefits, but everything this company makes is fabulous. Say goodbye to runny stool or bloated bellies, this food is the right stuff.

    Picky Eater Loves Primal Beef

I’ve finally found a winner with the Primal Freeze Dried Dog Food Nuggets in Beef flavor for my extremely picky fur baby! This complete and balanced meal has not only been a joy for my dog to eat, but it’s also given me peace of mind knowing that he’s getting all the nutrients he needs. The freeze-dried nuggets are easy to prepare and serve, and my dog goes crazy for them. His coat has become shinier and he seems more energetic since we made the switch. I’m so relieved to have found a product that he loves and that’s good for him too. Highly recommend for any pet parents struggling to please their finicky eaters!

Thank God we find this food

My little Maltipoo is the pickiest dog you will ever meet. She absolutely dislikes ANY food, treat etc. She was living off of ONE type of dried chicken stick we buy for her as a treat (which is literally the only thing she eats) and her blood markers were terrifying… No nutrition nothing! This food was recommended to us by another picky dog’s owner and I cannot believe how my dog inhales this food in no time. We are so so happy we finally found a nutritious food she loves! Highly recommended!

These nuggets were very hard and had to cut with knife. Took a long time to soak in order to give dogs. The rest I poured warm water on and will leave over night. I do feed frozen raw and was going to use this to travel but too hard to manage. You cannot crumble in your hand like they suggest. Can’t find an expiration date to see if maybe they were old and dried out.

One of my dog’s favorites foods

I have two picky eaters. Poodles are like that. They always eat the beef version of this brand well. It would be very expensive if they were large dogs but they’re not. They get this once a day but get different brands later in the day. Always agrees with them.
