Primal Freeze Dried Dog Food Nuggets Chicken

A safe, nutritious, and delicious way to make dry adult food taste great is to add Primal Freeze-Dried Adult Dog Food as a topper to the kibble.

$34.98 for 14 oz bag, about 50 nuggets per bag

You’re probably wondering if I’ve lost my mind recommending a grain-free food for dogs.  I promise I’m not crazy.

The more we study how grain-free diets cause some dogs to get dilated cardiomyopathy, a potentially fatal heart disease, the more we think it is due to the pulses they use to replace the grains for a carbohydrate source.  Pulses are things like peas, chickpeas, beans, etc.  Primal Freeze-Dried Adult Dog Food does not have any pulses in it, even though it is grain-free.

Second, Primal Freeze-Dried Dog Food is extremely expensive.  For a 50 pound dog, they need about 24 nuggets per day.  A 14 oz bag has about 50 nuggets.  That’s about $20 per DAY to feed a medium-sized dog.

What I recommend is using this as a topper to a complete and balanced dry dog food at least a few times per week.  Your dog will LOVE you for it!  And you’ll be supplying safe, complete, balanced, raw nutrition at the same time for a reasonable cost.

I only recommend raw food for healthy adult dogs.  Puppies, seniors, and dogs with chronic conditions (besides arthritis) should not eat raw food.  Also, raw goat milk is not safe to feed to dogs, so please ignore that labeling recommendation.

From the brand

Premium freeze-dried raw dog food made with cage-free chicken raised without antibiotics, steroids, or added hormones and with USDA-certified organic fruits and vegetables.

Minimally processed dog food delivers the highest digestibility for maximum nutrient absorption to support optimal weight, skin & coat, oral & eye health, and reduced stool volume Serve as a freeze-dried dog food topper or treat.

Adding Primal Pet Food just a few times a week will help you start to see the results raw food for dogs can provide Convenient & delicious raw nutrition that is shelf-stable. Easy to scoop and serve. Best when rehydrated with water or bone broth to satisfy your dog’s natural instinct

Crafted in the USA.

Wholesome adult dog food with real whole food ingredients. No synthetic vitamins or minerals. No artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. No corn, wheat, soy, lentils, or legumes.

Crumble the nuggets and mix 1 tablespoon of water or broth  per nugget (1/4 cup per 4 nuggets).  Let the liquid soak in before feeding.

As a sole diet, feed your dog by the weight range below:

  • 5–10 lbs: 4–7 nuggets
  • 10–20 lbs: 7–11 nuggets
  • 20–40 lbs: 11–19 nuggets
  • 40–60 lbs: 19–26 nuggets
  • 60–80 lbs: 26–32 nuggets
  • 80–100 lbs: 32–40 nuggets
  • 100 lbs and above: 40+ nuggets

As a topper, you can feed as many as you need to flavor the base diet.  Each nugget is 44 kcal so reduce your dog’s base diet accordingly.

Additional information

Feeding Primal Freeze-Dried Formula is easy. Simply serve as is, or rehydrate by adding water. To rehydrate, add 1 tablespoon of water for every nugget, or 1/4 cup of water for 4 nuggets. For best rehydrating results, break nugget into small pieces and mix thoroughly with water to force moisture into product.

My dog hasn’t missed a meal

My dog has always just grazed on her food throughout the day. We started adding this to her food and she absolutely loves it. She licks up every last speck of food. She hasn’t missed a meal since we switched her to this almost a year ago.

    Holy grail

We’re never switching back. Our 13 year old standard dachshund has never looked and felt better – so much so that he barks before every meal! And our 8 year old border collie with sensitive teeth can eat it right down without wanting to stop. They both feel great after and we can tell by their post-meal behavior …if someone thinks it costs too much (we understand), but DIY your own high quality food. The cost of Primals is related to quality AND convenience of them prepping it …Tip, buy through Subscribe & Save (with other items) and you’ll see a discount.

    Found a Balance

I’ve finally found a balance of food for my 14yr old pup. After years of looking for the right mix of food for his health and taste, I mix this with water and add in 1/3 can of Ziwi Peak canned chicken (he doesn’t like the Beef for some unknown reason) he eats it right up once he gets hungry. He’s not a breakfast eater but sometimes he likes and afternoon meal then a 1/2 meal at night. Our Vet even said that if not for his eyes mild cataract fogging he’d never guess he was 14 so I’m doing something right. He’s been eating for about 3-4 yrs but finally found the right canned food to mix with it because alone it’s too rich for him. He has a strong heart and acts like a pup chasing squirrels and such and very little shedding given that he’s a Jack/Corgi mix. When he eats regular grain dog food he sheds like crazy and we’re covered in white fur all over our clothes. If you have a high shedding pup, grain free without soy peas beans and legumes like this with Primal is a great start. It takes about a month to notice so don’t expect a miracle overnight but it will happen. It’s been a life changer for us.

    My dog LOVES it!

I ordered the small bag, but didn’t realize how small it is. Fortunately I have a small dog. I just got this as a topper for my dog’s food. She whimpers and makes funny little sounds waiting for me to crumble it over her food. Before I got this for her, she ate her food but didn’t exactly love it. Now she gobbles it down even when I don’t put one on top of her food. I put water over it all, but she loves it dry too (though then she tends to pick around it to eat it before her regular food). There are about enough biscuits in the small bag to use 1/day for a month.

    they LOVE it

I have been looking for quality food at a reasonable price for my two Boston Terrier sisters. They are very active, just over a year old, and also pretty picky. I have been feeding them refrigerated fresh food most of the time, but they got so that they didn’t really care for it. I also found it a problem now that I quarantine, because it meant regular trips to the grocery store to keep them fed.I found freeze dried raw food for the first time about three months ago. I can tell you I paid well over twice the price for that food, and they loved it… for a while. Between their pickiness and the significant expense, I decided to go back to the fresh food. Then, I found this. It smells exactly like the really super expensive stuff, and the girls wolfed it down. I like the convenience of this food, it doesn’t require refrigeration and is so lightweight that it’s easy to store a few bags in the pantry. I think I will start using this as a topper to the fresh food, and get the best of both worlds. I also found the suggested serving size a little small. The smaller sister is 20 lbs, the larger is 25 lbs, and they were still starving after 4 nuggets. The only thing I am not entirely sold on is the size of the nuggets. The other brand was small, kibble sized bits, which absorbed water right away. I just got this, so I don’t know if the girls will continue to like it, but I hope so, because I just ordered two more bags.

    Dog loves this!

Have tried so many different kibble options at food store. Always tried to pick the high quality and/or grain free. Sometimes dog would like it but there would always be periods of time where food was left in bowl for 1/2 the day. Dog has always had gas that would clear a room as well. Started feeding just this and it is wonderful. The gas is gone and he loves it. He starts jumping when he sees us putting it in the bowl and it is gone in about 30 seconds. He then goes back to his bowl periodically to nudge it looking for more. I was worried that he might be hungry but he doesn’t seem to scrounge around the house looking for food dropped by my kids anymore than usual (is still a dog after all) and I have never heard stomach growling or seen him look uncomfortable. I think he just REALLY loves it.We have tried the duck and lamb but I like how the chicken is usually a couple of dollars cheaper and it also crumbles easier when we prepare it.Now for the bad part. This stuff is CRAZY expensive to be the only food. My dog is a 15-20 pound yorkipoo so I give him 4 pieces twice a day. At $20plus a bag we go through it much faster than I would like. I can’t even imagine if I had a bigger dog. My mother-in-law sees how much he loves the food and asked about it for her English Setter. We both agreed it would be way too expensive to be a sole food source for that size dog.We continue to use because we like not having to leave the room due to the dog’s gas but I wonder how long I will be willing to pay this much before trying something else (honestly-probably a long time–his gas was really bad!!)

No recourse if they send you the wrong flavor

My dogs do like it but…..I purchased 4 different flavors but they sent 2 of same flavors. I tried to replace it but the fact that you can’t speak to anyone about nor is it returnable will make me never purchase from this company again. Also, this product is super expensive.

I use this crumbled as a topper for dry dog food.

My dog has pancreatitus so is on a very limited diet. He gets bored with his staple dog food, one half block of the primal freeze dried chicken, crumbled over 2 cups of his dry food gets him to eat. I ordered the pork flavor but his medical condition flared up, not sure why other than he does better with chicken products. I do use freeze dried beef liver sprinkles successfully, but the freeze dried chicken livers made his condition act up. It’s hit or miss, but I wouldn’t give him up for any reason, he’s worth it! P. S. Vet told me he developed his medical condition because of eating too much fat, he was a big fan of cheese but I didn’t know it would result in such damage. When the pancreas swells, it’s very painfull for them, as well as causing mucous poop many times a day. Not fun when you have a dog screaming in pain as he squats to relieve himself. I would recommend trying this product for your dog, introduce slowly.

My very fussy dog eats them!

Besides the flavor, value for the cost and easy to use, our dog likes them and has continued to eat them. Our dog rarely likes a dog food after he tries it. The Primal Freeze Dried food has been different, he continues to eat this in Chicken flavor, Venison, and Pork. He persists eating them by the chunk, not mixed with any liquid. He is a 12 lb Pom and has gone for days without eating just about anything, even off the table, but he will take the chunk, guard it until he decides to eat it. Don’t try to take it from him! That makes this food a sure thing for our Lil boy! To me it means the flavors must be good to him and the cost cannot be an issue since he eats so little otherwise. As long as he eats Primal I will order!

    Picky dog likes

My dog eats kibble with freeze dried pieces crumbled on top of it. Out of no where he just stopped eating and I realized he was bored with the stuff I was giving him and I needed to find a new flavor and brand. I like this one because each rectangle is more nutritionally balanced than some others out there and better than regular treats. Even though I approved of the quality, the big question was if my picky dog would approve of the taste! He did, which is amazing because he likes nothing. Instead of mixing them with water I just crumble about half a piece onto his kibble and he eats it up. I’m going to keep buying this brand and try some other flavors until he stops eating his food again.

Dog loves, also solved gland problem!

My dog absolutely loves this food (we get the chicken). He’s 13 pounds and I give him 2 nuggets with a tablespoon of kibble, but once I’m out of kibble I might just stick to the nuggets. (Serving size says 5-8 nuggets a day but he gets tons of treats.) Bonus, my dog has to get his glands expressed usually every 4 weeks, this time I waited 8 because he didn’t indicate that they were bothering him but I wanted to stay on top of it so they don’t get impacted. To my surprise and delight, they vet said they were empty! I credit that to this high fiber food which makes his stool pretty firm and therefore good for gland function.

Even my picky eater is happy with this food

I started feeding this food to my little dog who is a very picky eater. She seems to love the flavor and licks her bowl clean of all traces of food. It is expensive, but having a freeze dried food means I don’t have to be constantly checking on expiration dates. It is easy to pick up and take with me when we travel and it stores well in it’s own bag. Definitely worth trying.

    My puppy LOVES this food!

I am so impressed by how much my puppy loves this food. I’ve never purchased freeze dried food, but was impressed by the reviews. I was very surprised to see the size and weight of the nuggets. My pup (a Havanese) did not eat her kibble even though it’s a high quality (and expensive) product. I bought cans of toppers to try to entice her to eat, but she continued to walk away from it. Now I can put a little kibble in her dish along with a crumbled up nugget with warm water and she loves it and eats every morsel in her dish! She actually barks in anticipation of eating when I’m putting it together! I’ve never had a dog that was so finicky, but very happy to have discovered this product!

    Excellent Food with Important Disclaimers!!!

I have a 10 lb. mini dachshund who has sensitivities to all of the commonly available pet store foods. I tried every brand, including those that are grain free, special diets, premium brands, etc. No matter what I gave her, she vomited EVERY day. She also had flaky dry skin and terrible dermatitis all along the edges of her ears. The only thing that helped was when the vet prescribed a daily dose of Pepcid AC. If she missed even one dose the vomiting returned. Given the fact that being on continual antacid drugs causes nutritional malabsorption, I was eager to find a way to get her off of that drug!In desperation I decided to try her on a raw meat diet. I began with a frozen prepared raw chicken dog food. I was so thankful that it worked! Eventually I tried the Primal brand frozen raw chicken formula, and that was the best: no tummy troubles, great skin and coat, and her dermatitis totally cleared up, HURRAY! When I discovered the Primal brand freeze-dried chicken formula I gave it a try and it seems nearly as good for her as the frozen (I think I am detecting a slight return of her dermatitis).BUT there are some important caveats:1) The feeding guidelines on the packaging are grossly inaccurate (I found the same to be true with their frozen formula)! My little dog is less active than average. According to the package I should be feeding her 4 nuggets per day. In fact she needs *7* nuggets a day to maintain a trim, healthy weight. When I initially fed her according to Primal’s guidelines she became emaciated (ribs and spine protruding)!2) It is VERY EXPENSIVE! (Especially when you may need to feed nearly twice the amount suggested on the package!) I cannot imagine trying to feed this to any dog over 10 lbs. the 14 oz package lasts about a week.3) It can be difficult to find–even online. So a back-stock at home is a must! Also good to know:The nuggets are too big and dry for my little dachsie to eat right out of the package. If you just pour water on them (even hot tap water) they do not absorb much, no matter how long it sits. They crumble quite easily, though, so I crumble them up and then add water to make a kind of porridge consistency.Since my dog is so sensitive to other foods, I am able to use small pieces of the nuggets as treats for her, which is a big advantage over the frozen version.

I give my dog one square in the morning and one in the evening I have a very small dog and I make sure they get plenty of water because of course it’s gonna expand in their stomach, so I wanna make sure that they’ve got plenty of water to drink while eating it, but they seem to don’t like the price quite a few in the bag
