Sold by weight, so there may be more or less nuggets in each bag

Description

You’re probably wondering if I’ve lost my mind recommending a grain-free food for dogs.  I promise I’m not crazy.

The more we study how grain-free diets cause some dogs to get dilated cardiomyopathy, a potentially fatal heart disease, the more we think it is due to the pulses they use to replace the grains for a carbohydrate source.  Pulses are things like peas, chickpeas, beans, etc.  Primal Freeze-Dried Adult Dog Food does not have any pulses in it, even though it is grain-free.

Second, Primal Freeze-Dried Dog Food is extremely expensive.  For a 50 pound dog, they need about 24 nuggets per day.  A 14 oz bag has about 50 nuggets.  That’s about $20 per DAY to feed a medium-sized dog.

What I recommend is using this as a topper to a complete and balanced dry dog food at least a few times per week.  Your dog will LOVE you for it!  And you’ll be supplying safe, complete, balanced, raw nutrition at the same time for a reasonable cost.

I only recommend raw food for healthy adult dogs.  Puppies, seniors, and dogs with chronic conditions (besides arthritis) should not eat raw food.  Also, raw goat milk is not safe to feed to dogs, so please ignore that labeling recommendation.

From the brand

Premium freeze-dried raw dog food made with cage-free duck raised without antibiotics, steroids, or added hormones and with USDA-certified organic fruits and vegetables.

Grain-free Upgrade from kibble. Minimally processed dog food delivers the highest digestibility for maximum nutrient absorption to support optimal weight, skin & coat, oral & eye health, and reduced stool volume

Serve as a complete & balanced meal, a freeze-dried dog food topper, or treat. Adding Primal Pet Food just a few times a week will help you start to see the results raw food for dogs can provide

Convenient & delicious raw nutrition. A shelf-stable, great alternative to frozen dog food. Easy to crumble and serve. Best when rehydrated to satisfy your dog’s natural instinct.

3-4 nuggets per oz

Crafted in the USA.

Wholesome adult dog food with real whole food ingredients. No synthetic vitamins or minerals. No artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives. No corn, wheat, soy, lentils, or legumes.

Directions

Crumble the nuggets and mix 1 tablespoon of water or broth  per nugget (1/4 cup per 4 nuggets).  Let the liquid soak in before feeding.

As a sole diet, feed your dog by the weight range below:

  • 5–10 lbs: 4–7 nuggets
  • 10–20 lbs: 7–11 nuggets
  • 20–40 lbs: 11–19 nuggets
  • 40–60 lbs: 19–26 nuggets
  • 60–80 lbs: 26–32 nuggets
  • 80–100 lbs: 32–40 nuggets
  • 100 lbs and above: 40+ nuggets

As a topper, you can feed as many as you need to flavor the base diet.  Each nugget is 44 kcal so reduce your dog’s base diet accordingly.

    Inconsistent product

My dog loves this food. He would gobble up the whole bag if I let him, but turns his nose up at other high end foods. The first time I ordered from Amazon, the primal duck was great and identical to what I’ve gotten at my local pet stores. But this time something is off – the nuggets are several shades darker than normal, they’re extremely hard and brittle (instead of the usual chalky, flakey texture) and smell off. I’m afraid to feed this to my pup – I don’t know if it’s a bad batch or a counterfeit product, but something is not right.I called Primal directly and explained what I found. They told me that it’s normal for some batches to have a different texture because the fat content can vary. I was a little surprised they didn’t ask for the batch/lot number or document the call. My puppy still loved the food, but I’ve stopped feeding him primal because the cost is just not sustainable.

OK, but there are better options

I like it, but not as well as Stella & Chewy’s duck formulas. On the plus side, these nuggets hold together nicely and don’t come apart unless and until you separate them (I always break them down a bit for feeding). That makes them great for travel. On the minus side, they don’t seem as “fresh” as Stella & Chewy’s. They’re not rancid–they just don’t have quite the same appearance. That’s reflected in our dogs’ feelings about them. They’ll both eat them, but neither puts them at the top of the heap when sorting through options and often they’ll just walk off and leave them sitting in the bowl if they’re not very hungry. If I’ve added water to “reconstitute” them as recommended, they won’t eat them at all. Given the price, which is the same as Stella & Chewy, this isn’t one I’ll buy again.

    Great stuff fast delivery!

Great product! Changed our older dog to this food and his health has improved dramatically! Lost weight and has better energy, hips working better, and more! I’m very impressed w this product! Used to use the frozen stuff but this is just easier to deal with. If you won’t to improve the health of your dog then quality food is a must. I am not affiliated w this product, it just really made a difference and I wanted to share

    Love the product

Love the product! My food particular Italian Greyhounds will eat their kibble when added to this product with a bit of water. I add water, let set for 10 minutes and then add kibble immediately before serving. The kibble are still hard enough to provide dentifrice benefit. However Amazon ships it in a padded envelope which does not provide protection for the portion control chunks. They are crushed by the time I receive them. PLEASE ship in a box! Will try 2 at once next time to see if they will ship in a box automatically.

High quality that my dogs deserve.

My dogs love this as is (dry), but I prefer to serve it mixed with water. I got the duck flavor, first. The nuggets are easy to crumble. At just under 6-1/2 pounds, I feed 2 nuggets per dog (=4) in the morning (I have two dogs). In the afternoon, I feed other foods. Ingredients are impressive. Smell is sort of like the smell of grass–very pleasing. I will be purchasing this from now on. Dogs have Wellness Core Small Breed dry kibble at their disposal (I add 2 tablespoons to their bowls each day to keep it fresh).

Super healthy dog food & easy to feed

My dog loves this food. I feed him a Raw diet, and sometimes it’s more convenient to have a freeze dried meals for him instead of frozen raw. This is my go-to food for my dog for one of his meals per day, and is especially convenient for traveling. You just add some water and it turns into a delicious meal for your pet. 🐾

Quality dog food for a picky eater!

My picky eater chihuahua who has very few teeth left absolutely loves this food. She cleans her bowl every time I feed her now! Primal is an expensive product, but great quality. You pay for what you get! Just make sure you add enough water to the pellet so that it’s completely rehydrated before feeding it to your dog. 👍🏽

    Old, Poor Quality Products

I purchased two bags of the duck on 2/6/2024 and just opened one of the two. The nuggets are very hard with a 7/4/2024 expiration date. I’ve purchased these from other stores before and they’re usually soft with a years-long expiration date. Obviously, they’re sending out older products with poorer quality to those who are purchasing from Amazon, which is so disappointing. If the bag is expiring in the same year, it’s been sitting around for a long time. Needless to say, I am canceling my subscription and purchasing it elsewhere.

not a fan due to price, size, and dog not liking them much

small bricks are hard. need to totally cover with water and wait, wait for it to rehydrate. Or use a knife to break apart. Price of $50 for a bag the size of a cereal box may be the going rate but too steep for me. And then my dog was not a fan so I am doctoring the 2 bricks with other foods to get her to eat this up.

    Actually, My Dog Loves It

My dog is not an eater. But ever since I introduced Primal Nuggets to her diet, she wants to eat all the time. Not surprising considering it’s not dry kibble (I’m sure she’d be ravenous for cheap canned dog food). What I do like about this stuff though is that it contains a lot of organic ingredients (meats and vegetables), it’s grain-free, and it’s technically a raw food.If you feed your dog only this food, you’ll go through bags really quickly. I haven’t counted how many nuggets are in one bag, but I’m estimating around 40-50. What I do is feed my dog one-half of a nugget and mix it with her kibble for each meal. I crumble the nuggets as small as possible then add a little water and stir. You don’t need much water to rehydrate one nugget.

    My dogs love this

I have two Shih tzu who love the Primal raw. I crumble the bars up and mix in with their kibble (Petcurean Now Fresh). I rotate between several of the proteins. They love this duck formula and in general prefer poultry. My three year old used to be very picky and I spent most of his first 2.5 years cooking his food. He often had tummy issues. When I got his younger “brother” last August the breeder was using Purina Pro. I consulted the owner of a local independent pet store who recommended the Petcurean Now. I was using Stella and Chewys dried raw as the mix-in until I came across the Primal raw last December. The boys love it and no more problems with their guts. All of their food is grain free, but there’s a lot of fruit and vegetables, so be prepared for larger volume output due to all the fiber.

    My pups love this

My pups absolutely love this. They get so excited when I pull the bag out. It is good for them. I did a lot of research before I purchased this. It gives them all the nutrients that they need. It does take a little bit of time to make. Some of the pieces are very soft and easy to break apart and some of them are a little harder. So it does take time to make but it is worth it if you want your pups to have a nutritious meal.

I switched from Origin when it was recommended by another dog owner that I try this brand …

I have a poodle, and he loves Primal Formula. I switched from Origin when it was recommended by another dog owner that I try this brand (previously fed my dog Origin) as it would help with my dog’s skin allergies. I have noticed a difference and I’m very happy with Primal Formula. I gave it four stars instead of five, because of the three packages I purchased through Amazon, in one pack the food was dehydrated to the point where it was hard as a rock and I had to use scissors to cut it up before soaking it in water to give to my dog. The other two packs were dehydrated as normal, which is how it always been when I purchased it from my local pet store. Hopefully that one package was a fluke. Other than that, I really think this has been the best product for my dog. After two years of vet visits with unsuccessful attempt to clear up his allergies, I finally notice a difference when I changed his diet to Primal Forumla……. and he absolutely loves it. This morning when I fed him his breakfast, he gobbled it up as usual……and he didn’t even without tell me that someone else in the house had just fed him a few minutes before I did. 🙂

Not the same as my local pet stores product

I’ve never written a review but I was highly disappointed. Typically I buy this product from my local pet store. It is amazing and crumbles easy. HOWEVER, this bag I purchased on Amazon was hard, not easy to crumble, and looked stale. It’s too expensive and extra to get from Amazon! Go buy from a pet store, worth it.

    My Dog Loves It!

I make my dogs food. However, I live in a location where we are subject to typhoons. So, I have this in my pantry in the event that power goes out… which is has. My dog scarfed this stuff down. I have found that it doesn’t really re-hydrate by just being put in water. So I crumble the nuggets up and hydrate it in a bowl of water that way.

This food has changed my dog’s life!!!

I have a 10 year old pitbull who has every food allergy under the sun, and this food has really been a godsend. This poor guy has suffered through countless ear infections, has limped around due to his incessant paw licking and gnawing, and was a regular at the vet (who never helped him, just prescribed prednisone, a steroid that shortens a dog’s lifespan). Frustrated, I did my own research on dog nutrition and common dog food allergens. Low and behold- primal formula freeze dried formula had everything that a dog should have and none of the common allergens I was trying to omit from my dogs diet. He’s been eating this for a couple of months now, and he has had no allergic reactions ever since! He’s a completely different dog. AND huge bonus, he absolutely LOVES the stuff! I love that the ingredients are things I recognize like blueberries, kale and coconut oil, not weird preservatives I can’t pronounce. If you have a food allergic dog, I highly recommend! I would suggest staying away from beef or chicken flavor though, as they are the most common protein allergies for dogs (my dog is allergic to these of course). Just a really great product for food sensitive dogs. Life changing!!!!

    Fabulous as a Treat!

This stuff is FABULOUS. I call it Duck, Duck, GOOSE! when I let my little Shih Tzu know she is getting some as we use it for treats. I used to have the problem that even though she is my service dog sometimes she cannot go she will get too tired of I am going my mom. I don’t go anywhere alone. So I tell her if she is good which means no making herself sick with worry she will get this when I get back. You know I have not had one incident since I started that? And it has made grooming much easier. I just smoosh it up with my fingers in a bowl and I don’t add the water and she usually only gets a half of one and they look like cubes from a tray. And we are all set.I started getting it from a local store Republic of Paws before it came on Amazon and my dog will NOT ever take treats from anyone. She did from them for this. So I highly recommend it and it is wonderful for sensitive tummies.

Key to a happy and healthy Bully!

Our English Bulldog is true to form with all of the typical food sensitivities and allergies they are so well known for. We spent his first year trying various high end foods and elimination diets until we discovered Primal Foods. THANK GOODNESS! For the last four years he couldn’t be happier and more comfortable! No more yeast infections, red bumps, welts, hair loss, miserable itchiness, oatmeal shampoo baths and constant vet visits for steroid shots and antibiotics. We have not had to visit the vet for food allergies once during this time. The expense of Primal Foods is a fraction of what we had spent on vet bills trying desperately to make our best friend healthy and comfortable. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of this product or the health benefits for dogs susceptible to food allergies (We use both Duck and Lamb). I hope this helps anyone struggling with this issue. FYI – Even better, we have replaced the frozen Primal with the freeze-dried (exact same ingredients), putting our minds at ease regarding the handling during delivery and storage prior to purchase at various stores.

I have never seen my dog enjoy any kind of treat like this one.

The media could not be loaded.

One day in Los Angeles we were at a pet store and we brought our little Pomeranian with us. They were giving out free samples of different kinds of treats and this product was one of them. I have never seen our dog go this wild and crazy for a treat she absolutely loved it and devoured it. You could mix it with water and use it as food but we don’t bother doing that we just break it up in our hands and give it to her as a treat she absolutely loves it and I would recommend anybody to buy this that loves their dog.

Great Food, Not So Good as Training Treats

Purchased these to cut up and use as treats, which is NOT what this product is designed for. It worked somewhat, but it also made a lot of crumbs, which was not ideal for training. Loved the ingredients, may try again for treats down the road. The upside, my dogs loved having the crumbs over the top of their normal meal. 😉

    Appreciate the crumbles.

Some reviewers dislike this easy-crumbling product, but I prefer it. Primal nuggets in other flavors are too tough to break up given my stiff fingers. I’d like to switch flavors occasionally, but since my small dog likes this one (hydrated, of course), I’ll stick with it. Thank goodness he’s not picky.

    Great Quality Dog Food

The quality if first rate. My dog eats this dog food when she refuses all others. It is a miracle to me that she eats this without prompting and I know she is getting nutrition. Also the company is responsible in preparing the dog food.It is expensive but way cheaper than throwing away other dog foods because she will not touch them. And this is very easy to prepare. It is raw food…wash your hands thoroughly after preparing it and make sure the work surface has been sanitized.

    Best Food

Primal is a great food for my little dog’s. I started to feed frozen raw Primal then changed to the freeze dried since we had been traveling in our motorhome it worked well. We have now stopped traveling but I continue to use the freeze dried because my dog’s love it and the ease of use. I was not going to give 5 stars for Value for money but if you want the best safest dog food out there for your fur babies which Primal is then it will be a higher price. I will continue to buy it as long as I can afford it.

not same as frozen- difficult to rehyrate

I usually feed my dogs the frozen pellets by the same company. I got these freeze dried ones for travel convenience. Dogs do NOT like them and they are very hard to rehydrate. The duck ones decomposed into shreds rather than staying as pellets and were easier to rehydrate than the freeze dried beef. I had to rehydrate with milk and add eggs and oil before the dogs would touch the stuff. Strange because they love the frozen meat pellets. Very healthy product but I won’t order the freeze dried ones again, just frozen.

Just started feeding raw and this is the easy way. So far she likes it.You just crumble the biscuit and add broth or goats milk to hydrate. It looks like canned food at that point. This would be easy to travel with..you can also add water to hydrate.

    Yummy

My dog eats it up. Licks the bowl. I feel good about what’s in it.

    My picky guy loves this

i have a little two year old 22lb mixed breed who is so so picky. He eats a little over a cup of food per day a mix of 2 primal cubes (I run them under warm water for about 30 seconds, and then use a knife and fork to shred them into crumbly pieces), mix with merrick kibble or natures path canned food. He just loves it.

it’s like crack for my dog

pour her kibble into the bowl, she smells, walks away. crumble half a nugget of this on top, scarfs the food down. These are soft nuggets about 2 inches long. Break into any size you need. Instructions say you can add water and use this for food, but I don’t even eat this well, better to just use as a supplement to good quality kibble.

It is natural and no by products and made in USA.

My one year old maltese loves it. No problem in him not eating this when I serve it to him. The only problem was that some of the bars were broken up but that will not prevent me from future purchases.

    A favorite in our home

I don’t use these nuggets as a meal but instead as an add-in to my dogs food.My dog gets bored eating the same old kibble every single day so I add one half of a nugget, crumbled up into each of his two meals. One bag has approx. 20 nuggets and we switch up the flavor each time we place an order with no digestive issues.
