Additional information

RECOMMENDED DAILY FEEDING AMOUNTS: We recommend that you keep your dog in ideal body condition and not allow your dog to become overweight. The exact amount of food your dog requires will need to be adjusted according to age, activity and environment. But a good place to start is with these guidelines for an average, active, adult dog fed once daily. MAKING THE SWITCH TO PRO PLAN: Although you’ll be anxious to see the difference Pro Plan can make in your dog, please allow 7 – 10 days to ease the transition from your dog’s current food. Each day, simply feed a little less of the previous food and a little more Pro Plan until you’re feeding Pro Plan exclusively. This gradual transition will help avoid dietary upsets. Contains a source of live (viable) naturally occurring microorganisms. Provide adequate fresh water in a clean container daily. For your pet’s health, see your veterinarian regularly.

My two large breed dogs like the taste…however with my standard poodle, he seems to strain going to the bathroom every few days. I end up giving him pumpkin…Contents say there’s fiber perhaps it needs more

Great product for Large Breed dogs.

This is a great dog food for my 2 large breed dogs. When pro plan changed to the kibble with soft chunks – I was not happy. IMO those soft chunks when sitting in a hot truck for transport to a store etc or on a shelf for a while can spoil faster. I like a full dry kibble that I can monitor the quality of a bit better. Our dogs can not tell us if something tastes bad unless it is really tainted and even some dogs might eat that. I actually left the pro plan product all together for a while but came across this large breed formula which also comes in giant formula FYI and am very happy. I get this as a subscribe and save for even great savings! This is delivered right to my door with ease. TY Amazon for stocking this.12/24/16 — I no longer use this product — feel the standard has changed and there is way too much corn, grain and filler. I use Nutrisource which is not widely available in brick and mortar stores but accessible online and made entirely in the USA.

    Made Doth Dogs Sick

DO NOT BUY. This food made both of my dog sick. It gave them both had watery diarrhea and they started losing weight. I’ve never had an issue with Purina food before, but I’ve heard the rumors that Purina can be randomly horrible, despite being vet recommended. Seems the rumors are true. I thought the Pro Plan line of food was safe from this, but no. This food smells cheap… and the dogs agree. Halfway through the bag, my older male Lab mix refused to eat any more of it; That’s a big deal for him, he is a food monster and never refused a meal. I’ve since switched to Taste of the Wild and both dogs have made an immediate turn-around. Solid stool, and gaining weight back! I can no longer buy or recommend Purina dog food.

    Great Quality

As with many pet owners, my dog’s nutrition is incredibly important to me, especially because he is a large-breed puppy and we are building the foundation for a long, healthy life. Due to the fact that I am in no way qualified as an animal nutritionist I am not comfortable with making his food myself, and due to the VERY lax regulations on dog food I also wont trust any brand that hasn’t been around for a while with good reviews. All that said, I am beyond pleased with purina pro-plan, though I do wish they had more meat varieties in their dry foods.

    Good Dog Food

You will find out just how good a dog food is by changing over to a cheaper brand. I bought a 50lb bag of Kibbles and Bits and like everything else, he loved it. But he’s a Lab that loves any type of food at any time of the day. He was gaining weight and didn’t seem as active. He got worms too. So I got rid of the worms and rid of K&B. He’s now back on Pro Plan where he will stay. One quick way to find out if your dog is sick is in his eating habits. If my Lab even hesitates to eat, I know there is something wrong.

Our dogs LOVE this food! It’s changed their life honestly! Their weight is perfect and I’ve had hardly any issues with anyone getting sick! (All three of our dogs have food allergies and stomach issues!) will continue to buy! Totally worth the money!

Been using this food for years

Nothing to dislike. We have bird dogs and a trainer friend works for Purina and got us started on this. We live in rural Maine near the Canadian border. The closest store that sells this is 80 miles away. So while the Amazon price is not the cheapest I have found, driving that far and back negates that advantage. I push the reorder button and 2 days later my UPS man is in the driveway. Amazon is GREAT for those of us who live in rural areas.

Good food my dog actually eats it!

I bought this for my dog who started having hip issues. She used to be more active and was on the Purina Sport 30/20 Salmon. She seems to really like this food which is great. Our Dr gave us pain meds to help but knowing she’s getting the extra joint help is important. I mix her food with freeze dried food, Stella & Chewy’s which I highly recommend. My dogs have been onshine kind of Purina Pro plan since they were puppies. I’ve never had problems!

    convenience of door step delivery

I am very familiar with this product, my Lab has been eating Purina Pro Plan since she was a puppy. It was recommended by the breeder and I have continued first with the Pro Plan Puppy for Large breed to the present Pro Plan Adult Focus for Large breed. I decided to order on line based on recommendation of others and the convenience of door step delivery. The only concern I had about my first delivery was the conduction that is would arrive in. Who wants to open the bag and have nothing but crumbs…..not the case here, the original bag was placed inside of a shipping box with padding to protect it. I’m happy to put an end to lugging, lifting, loading and unloading those heavy bags…..its a pleasure to lift it once and carry directly inside the house.

Vet recommended – Dog LOVES it!

We adopted a pet that was eating Kal Kan (not a quality dog food) and we switched him to Blue Buffalo assuming it was “good”. He began having diarrhea and drinking TONS of water. His first vet check up after we got home the vet told us that many dogs have diarrhea on Blue Buffalo and suggested we do a gradual transition to Purina Pro Plan. Best thing we could have done. Pup is doing great – no more stomach issues and drinks a normal amount of water now. He’s energetic and happy and can hardly wait to eat! Very pleased with this food.

High quality dog food at a great price

Due to recent FDA reports about grain free dog foods, we decided to wean our Dane onto another food since heart disease is even more common in the giant breeds. I always thought Purina was a *junk dog food*, but this is very high quality, and my dog loves it! The kibble is larger than what she’s used to and she all but swallows it whole, and the smell is pretty undesirable to me, but I’m grateful this is available on Amazon for such a great price!

My Springer has been on this for six years since he was a puppy. He loves it and his digestive system handles it very well. He does better on the large dog chicken and rice than the higher protein for sporting dogs.

    Our brand.

We have very spoiled pets, and came across this dog food last year after purchasing our English bulldog. After trying him on quite a few different brands, this seemed to be the key. He’s been on it ever since and we couldn’t be happier. We also switched our other dogs to this as well and they love it also. All of our fur babies have benefited so much from it and for that we are grateful. I love that there are no added junk or unhealthy things in here. It keeps our dogs healthy and happier which is our main goal. Not only that but it comes in many different flavors. I’m so glad we made the switch to this food and we will use it for years to come.

Regular Purchase, Amazon Price Always Competitive

I’ve been purchasing Purina Pro Plan Large Breed dog food for my Great Dane mix for the past two years. My sister is a vet and she recommended Purina Pro Plan Large Breed dog for to me. I either purchase Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Focus, or

Purina Pro Plan Dry Dog Food, Savor, Shredded Blend Adult Large Breed Formula, 34-Pound Bag, Pack of 1

, depending on which formula is less expensive at the time. Before purchasing, I always compare the price between Amazon, Petsmart, Petco, and Country Maxx, including any applicable coupons. Although Amazon doesn’t accept manufacturer coupons, the price for this dog food is always competitive with every pet store I check. It is usually either the lowest price available or within a couple dollars. I will continue to order Purina Pro Plan Large Breed dog food from Amazon on a regular basis.

It’s a shame the quality has gone down.

I made a switch from Royal Canin to this mostly because the absurd price increase in Royal Canin.. over 40 dollar price hike!!! At first i loved this brand but the last 3 orders that have come in about 1/4 of my bag has been dust crumbles. It’s almost as if someone purposely smashed the bag around and my dog does not eat the powder and it becomes a loss. At first i was like “maybe it was a shipping thing” and i kept purchasing but after the 3 consistent bag of nothing but crumbles i decided i was done with the quality of this brand. It’s clear they no longer value the quality and are just pushing whatever they have.

This was one of the brands of dog food suggested …

This was one of the brands of dog food suggested by the veterinarian when I adopted two standard poodles. They had some digestive issues, probably due to anxiety, when I got them, so they needed to be on home-cooked rice and chicken for a while. Gradually I substitued some of this dog food for some of the rice, and they are now eating mostly this dog food (with some home-cooked chicken or egg). The vet suggested that the dog food be softened before serving it to the dogs. I found that they needed to have it substanitally softened for several hours so that they managed it well. I now put the allotted serving of this dry dog food into a dog’s clean bowl immediately after one meal, add water to more than cover the dry food, and place a cover over it to let it soften for about 8 hours until the next meal. This is working well. Her advice also was to avoid exercising the dogs for one-half hour before a meal and for one-half hour after a meal. These are healthy dogs and are very active. However, poodles seem to have sensitive digestive systems and these suggestions made meal-times easier for them.

Not Near as Good as Nutro, Not even close.

I only used this with my English Cream Golden because the breeders swore by it, and used it with some very expensive dogs. At about 12 months, he slowed down eating, and last few weeks, began losing weight, energy, and throwing up the Pro Plan. I was about to take him to the vet, when I tried giving him Nutro, which I’d used for twenty years, with fabulous results. I put two dishes side by side, with the Purina in one, Nutro in the other. Bam! He wolfed down the Nutro. So I mixed it 50/50, he picked out the Nutro, leaving the Purina. Within TWO DAYS of switching to Nutro, he was bouncing off the walls again like a two month old puppy, the difference in energy was simply stunning.Over twenty years, I’ve switched my own dogs to Nutro, and had many friends do the same. Without fail, we saw a marked difference in health and happiness of our dogs. Also, you’ll see a very marked difference in their coats at about two weeks, softer, no more doggie “waxy” feeling fur, better skin. Nutro also produces smaller, more solid stools than Pro Plan.I don’t work for Nutro, and don’t mean to bash Purina, as many swear by it, and reviews are great. My experience, over twenty years, and several dogs, Purina Pro Plan is no where near as good as Nutro, and just didn’t do well for my golden.

Great for joints HOWEVER Potentially harmful for dogs

My dog ate this for a 2 years. I didn’t know at the time but apparently he had a predisposition genetically to cancer. Lymphoma. This particular food had whispers or comments about triggering cancer in dogs. Well. It was true in my case. This dog food may help with joint problems such as hip dysplasia in dogs yet also has a potential to feed/trigger a dog that has a potential for cancer. Please be cautious when you feed this particular brand to you furbaby. I never write a review but I wanted to share this with someone who may have questions or doubts.

    Best value!

Our dog has stomach issues and since switching to this dog food we have had no more upsets. The quality of the ingredients were just what his tummy needed to regulate. In todays constant worry with inflation, I have also found this is consistently the cheapest place to buy this!

My Dogs says the Flavor is Unbeatable.

I have three Greater Swiss Mountain dogs (XL- dogs and have been been feeding Purina for years. Our original vet way back in the day swore by it, and he never handed out coupons that he got a cut of. I gotta be honest though; I gave it 5 stars across the board BUT I never actually tasted it, and my dogs don’t really talk so I’m just giving an educated guess!

    Love Purina Pro Plan Focus

Our Vet recommended Purina Pro Plan Focus for our 4 month old New Foundland that we just purchased. The transition from breeder Diamond dog food (home of two major recalls, last one in 2012 with salmonella) to Purina has been flawless! Our Gracie loves the food and it appears to provided everything she needs to be healthy. We trust our Vet implicitly as she uses Purina Pro Plan for her two dogs and she is a graduate of Cornell University School of Vet Medicine, one of the best in the country!!!I was very dismayed by a rather rough review in late November 2014 someone gave Purina Pro Plan. It has all the signs of a competitor rant!!!! Why else would someone spend all that time ripping a product!!!! Purina responded beautifully!!!! Purina’s research team and long standing reputation are praiseworthy….Our dogs have been Purina customers for over 34 years!!!!!Amazon delivered as promised in a nice and safe corrugated box right on our doorstep!! Their price cannot be beat and neither can Amazon Prime be beat!!!!!Is there a way to set up AUTO Delivery??? Would doing so even give a lower prioe???

As a puppy, tried to start on Wellness brand for our Rottie. That brand was too upsetting to digestive tract, constant loose stools. The breeder used this food for her adult dogs. Our BIG DOGS love this food.

We have a Golden Retriever & a Golden Doodle. The retriever has had skin problems all his life; which have reflected in his coat. Now his COAT (at age 12) is BEAUTIFUL. The hair on his tail is about 6 inches long and I have to trim his feathers and belly. The doodle, although larger and with an entirely different coat is 1 1/2 and he loves this product. We had fed a grain free product to the retriever until information came out about heart disease in retrievers caused by grain free food. Everywhere you look to reliable ratings, this food scores very high. Our boys love it and are healthy; we can’t ask for more.

    Beautiful coat and great digestion!

My dog is doing fantastic on this food. Purina is a trusted brand, and I chose to go with them because we were using Fromm Gold but got scared due to the reports of canine heart disease coming out with all these “natural” boutique foods. My cat has always done great on Purina and my vet recommends it highly so we tried Pro Plan and it’s been a great decision. Don’t listen to the workers or owners of pet food stores because they are biased based on sales commissions and faulty info. Listen to your vet-despite what the food stores will tell you your vet actually does know about nutrition and Purina has trials and history to back up their safety.

    Best Dog Food

You cannot go wrong with Purina Pro Plan for your pet. I’ve had problems with the grain free products that actually led to my pets early demise. Upon further research, I found that the best pet food you can buy is pet food brands that have been around for a long time and spent years in research and development, such as Purina. My golden retriever, loves Purina Pro Plan, and I have bought a few different types of this brand, such as chicken, salmon and turkey. She likes them all and has had no problems.

Veterinarian recommended it. They use it for their personal dogs. But the pantry moth thing cost us well over $500 in food after our people food and other animal food all got infested from the bags we bought at Petsmart!! They invade your house from your garage!! Petsmart took the second bag back and refunded our money. They said Purina was the problem and the bags infested with pantry moths came to them that way from Purina’s warehouse. We know first hand how difficult and expensive those things are to get rid of and eradicate from your property and goods. So not sure if the continuing problem is at Purina or Petsmart. But we switched to ordering it online from Amazon on their Subscribe and Save program and haven’t had any further problems so far. We still open the brand new bags outside on the driveway and check them before we bring them into the house. We also store the bags in a big plastic trash can with a lid in the garage to keep it sealed, protected and fresh just in case. Big pain, but can’t afford the time, stress, trouble, or money to go through the pantry moth thing again EVER!!

My Dogs seem to kike it

My dogs seem to like it and there haven’t been any complaints from them, so I will continue to buy it until they say something or turn their nose up at it.

Product is great but don’t do subscribe & save

The item itself is great, and is worth the purchase. However, I would not suggest setting up subscribe and save for this item. It NEVER comes in on time, even though I have it set to a regular schedule. I even tried setting it to come in earlier than I needed, and it still comes late.

The Dog seems to like it, but, he’s a golden, he’ll eat anything.

Good quality dog food. Dog food is SO Expensive now…but, Purina has been making dog food for a long time of all “qualities” with little issues. I assume he likes the “flavor” because the bowl is empty when he’s done.
